Correctional and detention facilities have proven to be hotspots for infection, with the ten largest U.S. outbreak clusters occurring in prisons. These facilities are affected by the surrounding communities, and outside communities are affected by facility outbreaks.
The map shows state and federal adult (and juvenile, when operated by the adult corrections
department) facilities in the United States with county-level data on numbers of
confirmed cases and deaths from the New York Times, updated daily, to indicate which
facilities are located in or near counties that appear to be at high risk for community
transmission. Community risk is calculated using three alternative metrics, with thresholds set by the user. Facilities at risk are identified based on distance to communities at risk, also set by the user.
This map is designed as a resource for families and advocacy groups and to assist decision-makers in prioritizing resources and adapting policies, including early release, in response to Covid-19 outbreaks. Risk information can also help prioritize lower-risk facilities for relaxing restrictions on visitation and external service providers.
